EXploring Possibilities thru Local Opportunities and RElationships!
The mission of the EXPLORE! program is to cultivate a college-going culture for ninth and tenth grade first generation local high school students while, at the same time, supporting and enhancing the educational experiences of Providence College students.
- Facilitate students’ development and understanding of their interests, abilities, and goals.
- Develop students’ awareness and understanding of the academic skills needed for college and other post-secondary opportunities.
- Expose students to the college experience by engaging with college students and learning about the range of academic, personal, and social opportunities that a college education can provide.
The program includes weekly on-site after-school programming throughout the academic year and several additional days of special events programs. In the fall semester, students engage in a variety of formal and informal programming structured around a unique college awareness curriculum. This programming continues in the spring semester, and is supplemented with a college visit in February and a two-day, content-oriented workshop program at Providence College.
College Bound Conference
In partnership with Breakthrough Providence, College Visions, and the National College Advising Corps, the College Bound Conference is an opportunity for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders to spend a Saturday learning about various aspects of the college-going process. The goal of the Conference is to guide and support students as they begin their journey towards their college or career goals, through mentorship and skill-building. This fall’s conference will be hosted at Providence College.
EXPLORE! students spend the day with a Providence College student. Participants attend classes, get a campus tour, eat in the cafeteria, and get a first-hand perspective of campus life.
PC Friars Men’s Basketball Game
EXPLORE! students get a taste of college life! Service-learners help to organize a trip to The Dunkin Donuts Center where participants get to watch a PC Friars Men’s Basketball game alongside current PC students and fans.
Spring College Visit
As part of creating a college-going atmosphere, EXPLORE! students are taken on college visits to explore different college campuses and atmospheres. The program has visited nearly all of Rhode Island’s colleges and universities, including Rhode Island College, University of Rhode Island, Brown University, and Roger Williams University.
College (EXPLORE)ation Days
College (EXPLORE)ation Days offer EXPLORE! students the chance to attend special workshops designed for their own academic and personal enrichment. Workshops are offered by Providence College faculty, students, and staff, from across multiple disciplines. The College (EXPLORE)ation Days offer high school participants a more in depth look at the various aspects of college life!
