Workshop Descriptions

Out Living Your Legacy

Presenter: Sara Jean-Francois Class of 2019
Out living your legacy is a presentation/workshop navigated around my experience as a college student, and also a first generation student. The workshop will analyze the effect of cultural and familial expectations and how these shape the way we identify as leaders and as individuals. The goal of the workshop is to address the intersectional identities we all carry, and how applicable the term “intersectional” can be as developing leaders.

Rendered Speechless: Relearning how to personally and prosocially interact, communicate, and build relationships in an increasingly digital world

Presenter: Jordyn Hagar Adjunct Faculty in Social Work
Come spend time reflecting on your current communication patterns and the role of digital communication in your life. Learn some of the research regarding the use of digital technology for communicating and interacting on relationship development, mental health, and social competence. Complete a communication assessment and spend time evaluating the effectiveness of your current communication profile. Evaluate the role that this has played in your life and brainstorm steps for moving forward in a more prosocial way.

Letting Community Lead: Consensus building and group decision making

Presenter(s): Kara Komprathoum and Miriam Hwang-Carlos from Generation Citizen
Consensus building is a method of decision making that is different than voting or a leader having executive decision-making power. Consensus building requires participants to listen to every member of the community. In our session, participants will identify issues that they care about in their community and imagine they are creating a project to tackle one of these issues. We will then spend the bulk of the session building consensus on one of these issues and exploring how this process vests power in our entire community.

Accepted: College Admissions 101

Presenter(s): Emily Gonzalez and Tina Meetran from College Visions
In this workshop, students will play the role of college admissions officers and review applicant profiles for acceptance, waitlist, and denial. Students will reflect on what it takes to be strong candidates for college admissions and set goals for how they might want to improve their candidacy in the coming year.
